    LIGHT AND CRISPY: WAFFLES

Jagriti ShuklaBy Jagriti ShuklaMarch 20, 20234 Mins Read

Waffles is a dessert made from leavened batter or dough that is cooked between two plates that are patterned to give a characteristic size, shape, and surface impression. There are many variations based on the type of waffle iron and recipe used. These are perfectly crisp and golden from the outside while being light and fluffy on the inside.

The tantalizing aroma of waffles will make you crazy. It have become so popular because of their amazing crispy golden exterior with deep pockets for holding syrup and butter. The basic ingredients are the same (flour, milk, eggs, and a pinch of salt), but points of departure include yeast, caramelized sugar, leavenings, and fillings or toppings. They are served with powdered sugar, syrup, sliced fruit, and sometimes whipped cream for topping. It has some more toppings like- blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, chocolate, and sprinkles.

    History Of Waffles

They have been a favorite food for hundreds of years, possibly dating back to the 13th Century. The first waffle irons with the characteristic honeycomb pattern appeared in the 1200s when a craftsman designed and forged cooking irons. Orginal irons featured a hinged design. Consequently, the batter was poured in, pressed together, and cooked over an open hearth fire. It is at this time the word for waffles, which comes from the old French word, guafre, translated to Old English wafla, first appears in print.

Over the years, in Europe, waffles have become commonly sold by street vendors. As a result, by the 16th Century, all of society is eating waffles. The poor make them using pretty much from flour and water. Therefore they resemble a thick biscuity cake. However, the privileged classes add eggs, milk, and honey which create a tasty, delicate treat.

Belgian waffles, as we know them today, debut at the New York World’s Fair in Flushing, Queens. Vendor Maurice Vermersch sells his wife’s recipe for Brussels waffles—fluffy yeast waffles with strawberries and whipped cream. A smart marketer, he changes the name to a more familiar country, Belgian waffles. Most noteworthy, the family refused to offer forks or knives because they insisted on serving them authentic. In Brussels, waffles are street food, served without syrup, and then merely with a sprinkling of powdered sugar.

    Types Of Waffles

    Brussels Waffle

The Belgian waffle is only known as Brussels waffle in the U.S. It is lighter and crisper with deep pockets and often served as a dessert. Brussels are rectangular waffles and bigger in shape. They are garnished with a simple dusting of confectioners sugar with chocolate sauce or whipped cream with some fruits and nuts.

    American Waffle

It is a waffle made with leavened dough with some baking powder and yeast. It is usually served as breakfast food which is topped with butter, maple syrup, honey, or powdered sugar. It is also served as savory toppings such as stew, smoked salmon, or chicken gravy. They may also be served as dessert which is topped with ice cream and other toppings.

    Liege Waffle

It is a smaller, handheld waffle-like donut. It has a yeast dough and is golden yellow, softer, and denser in texture, with a caramelized sugar coating that makes them sweet and distinct in flavor. It has irregular edges which are not perfect like other waffles. You can flavor it with cinnamon or vanilla.

    Hong Kong Waffle

It is a street waffle, which is topped with peanut butter and sugar or filled with fruit. It is also known as egg puffs. These waffles are cooked in a special mold. They are generally soft and not dense. Traditional Hong Kong-style waffles are full of the flavor of yolk. Sometimes different flavors, such as chocolate and honey melon, are used in the recipe and create various colors.

    Stroop Waffle

They are thin waffle with a syrup filling, which is originated from Dutch. It has stiff batter made from flour, butter, brown sugar, yeast, milk, and egg. Batters are put on the waffle iron. The warm waffle is filled with syrup or spread in between the waffle halves which glues them together.

As I am a waffle lover so I express my love for waffles with my small poem that what I feel for those freshly baked goodies and I can’t resist myself from that tasty smell. It is my feeling that when I grab a waffle in my hand and enjoy it.

I love waffles that are crispy and brown
No waffle in the world could ever make me frown,
Hot and steamy on a plate,
Nothing could ever taste so great
I picked up the fork and take a bite
Vanilla blooms on my tongue and chocolate drip with colorful sprinkles
Waffles are tasty and delight which makes you crazy.
