Traditional Janmashtami Desserts You Can Easily Make at Home

OliviaBy OliviaJuly 23, 20264 Mins Read

Janamashtami is a special day for many people across India, on which they commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna. This festival is celebrated with family and friends, along with traditional food and a variety of sweets.

For instance, many people enjoy desserts like kalakand for Janmashtami and other delicacies during celebrations. These delicacies add a festive touch and bring a sense of joy and devotion to the occasion.

Traditional Desserts For Janmasthami You Can Easily Make At Home

    Kalakand Barfi

    What You Need:

    Ingredients Quantity
    Milk 2 liters
    Sugar 100 grams
Lemon juice or vinegar 1 tablespoon
    Pistachios 10-12
    Beaten almonds  5-6 pieces

    How To Make:

Pour 1 liter of milk into each of 2 cooking pots and bring it to a boil. Next, squeeze some lemon into one of the vessels to derive paneer. Sieve this paneer, then strain the excess water.

Keep stirring the milk in the other vessel until half of it remains and it has reached a thick consistency. Stir it with a spoon occasionally to prevent it from sticking to the pan. Next, add the paneer from the 1st cooking pot to the milk and stir continuously until you reach a thick mawa-like consistency.

After that, add sugar to the thickened milk mixture and keep stirring. Next, pour this mixture onto an oil-greased tray and garnish with almonds and crushed pistachios. Finally, cut into preferred shapes and serve.

    Rava Laddu

    What You Need:

    Ingredients Quantity
    Rava (Semolina) 1 cup
    Ghee ⅓ cup + ¼ teaspoon
    Cardamom 4 pods
    Broken Cashew Nuts 12-15 pieces
    Raisins 12-15 pieces
Saffron Strands 5-6 or 1 pinch

    How To Make:

Add ¼ teaspoons ghee to a heated pan along with cashew nuts and raisins. Fry the cashew nuts until golden brown and the raisins until they swell. Keep stirring occasionally to prevent them from overcooking or burning, and add crushed almonds and pistachios. Fry for 5 seconds, then transfer the entire mixture to a large plate.

Heat the pan again, add rava, roast for 5 minutes and then transfer to the dry fruits plate to let the rava cool. After it has cooled down (not entirely though), add the powdered sugar and cardamom, then mix well. After that, add some melted ghee to a small portion of the mixture, mix it, and form small balls. Repeat the process for the whole mixture, and serve.

    Sweet Appam

    What You Need:

    Ingredients Quantity
    Rice flour ¼ cup
    Wheat flour 1 cup
    Jaggery ¾ cup
    Rava (semolina) 1 teaspoon
    Cardamom powder ½ teaspoon
    Cooking soda ½ teaspoon

    How To Make:

Take some water in a saucepan, warm it, dissolve some jaggery in it until it melts, and let it cool.  Next, take a mixing bowl, add ¼ cup of rice flour, 1 teaspoon rava and 1 cup wheat flour and mix thoroughly.

Once mixed, add the jaggery syrup to the mixing bowl through a strainer, followed by 1/4 teaspoon each of baking soda and cardamom powder.

Mix everything thoroughly, adding water as needed to achieve a thick yet flowing consistency.

Heat some oil in a kadhai and add ¾ of the mixture to it with a ladle. Fry until golden brown on all sides, and then take it out with a perforated ladle.

    Mawa Mishri

    What You Need:

    Ingredients Quantity
Milk 1 liter normal and 250 grams condensed, separately
    Ghee 10 grams
    Powdered sugar  50 grams
    Crystal sugar 50 grams
    Sliced almonds 50 grams
    Cardamom powder  5 grams

    How To Make:

Grease a pan with ghee and boil milk in it. Once the milk’s quantity reduces to half, add the condensed milk and keep stirring. Doing that will prevent the milk from sticking to the pan.

Boil this milk mixture until its volume is reduced to ¼, then add cardamom, almonds and sugar. Once done, cook it for 5 minutes, turn off the heat and let the mixture cool.

Next, add the crystallized sugar, mix it properly and refrigerate for an hour. Finally, take it out of the fridge and then serve it cold.

    Conclusion

Making desserts like kalakand for Janmashtami, along with other delicacies, will make your celebrations sweeter and more memorable. Moreover, you could complement these sweets and the celebration by adding savouries such as pakoras or samosas for a contrasting touch. Together, these treats add variety to the menu and make the occasion more enjoyable for family and friends.
